Spring Flowers
What does it mean when you see the first flash of colour? For me it’s the Daffodils on mass, then the Cherry trees start to blossom, and then it’s a count down to know what’s up next. Do you look out for the Magnolia tree where you live to mark that time of year, or is it anything yellow? The outbreak of yellow always seems to trigger a lot of movement from us gardeners to get going. I love the Viburnums’ that look dead one minute and are then covered in pink sweets overnight, as if someone has thrown paint at them. Or are you a fan of the spring alpines and the little blue Scabious, which are so pretty and delicate that they fit that smaller area. There are so many spring flowers that I think we have our personal favourites, but also our gardens can sometimes get taken over by them. Spring flower memories are why we have those moments; they will stick with you forever, with every spring that comes around. I bet everyone that reads this has his or her favourite flower in mind, and now as you think of it, you are smiling. For me it’s Tete a Tete, but because there are so many and we are allowed more than one favourite it’s Mimosa, covered in sticky fluffy yellow dots. Plants we all take for granted and probably never think of as spring flowers or anything more than what they are, and that’s herbs, but I would not have a garden that didn’t have them in. Thyme can start flowering quite early if not cut and the same with Chervil and Feverfew. My tip for any garden, spread as many herbs around your beds and borders as you can, and if you are lucky enough to have a herb garden, this is the time to be out there. Whatever the flower, enjoy it, if you like it have it; yes that’s right I am a gardener and you can have whatever flower YOU like, if it makes you happy and it’s working in the garden, it has therefore filled the brief. One more word on spring flowers and I have left this to the last for a reason, and I hope you all appreciate it. TULIPS….. Lynn Dupont for Life in Farnham
