Keeping it Local....May

The May bug….

…..May – Springtime, hopefully by we have some warmer weather to watch all the flowers and new growth coming up, and keep the momentum going.
By now you will probably already have started sowing seeds undercover and for a lot of flowers especially for cut gardens you can now sow outside direct, normally wait for the last frost, but with the climate we now have that’s not so easy to judge.
I have for the first time in a couple of years purchased my seeds at the right time, I am trying to have the flowers I enjoy but to also have more cut flowers than normal, I shall also be doing a bed of sweet peas my husband’s favourite, don’t forget they need plenty of good soil and to be well watered.
Keep on top of the weeding as those pesky weeds can go rampant if not spotted early enough. Also, one of the most common questions we get is ground elder please weed it, it doesn’t work that well, to really make an inroad to it you must dig the whole area up and keep removing any roots found. This can be difficult as there may be a lot of other plants hindering the process, for those that are happy to use a safe weed killer, we suggest using this product, if you keep hitting the areas in question they will die off at the root and reduce the problem, you will then be able to control any stray patches that appear better, always act quickly if you do not want this in your borders. You will never get rid of this plant completely without putting in time and perseverance so don’t be downhearted we all suffer it’s quite common, and we can always help.
This is the time that if you have planted your fruit and veg to keep an eye on bugs and watering, we want lovely juicy strawberries and plump beans to eat. Not forgetting the sweet peas for the table.
Don’t forget to feed your Rhodo’s and Azaleas this is there time to shine, hopefully they haven’t been hit by a late frost like last year, that ruined my mum’s Azalea, but I have lovely picture for you to enjoy when in its element.
Enjoy the season and try and keep up as time runs away with all us gardeners in this beautiful month.
Oh, and if you don’t have time just call us 😊01420 83471
