April antics….
…..April – Springtime, hopefully by we have some warmer weather to watch all the flowers and new growth coming up, and the start to the season. By now you will probably already have started sowing seeds undercover and for a lot of flowers especially for cut gardens you can now sow outside direct, normally wait for the last frost, but with the climate we now have, that’s not so easy to judge. I have for the first time in a couple of years purchased my seeds at the right time, I am trying to have the flowers I enjoy but to also have more cut flowers than normal, I shall also be doing a bed of sweet peas my husband’s favourite, don’t forget they need plenty of good soil and to be well watered. With the frosts watch fruit blossoms as they can be affected, they will burn the flower out and no fruit this year will be the result, if you can protect it’s worth it, if not hope for the frosts to be over. Keep on top of the weeding as those pesky weeds can go rampant if not spotted early enough. Get ready with the safe weed killer when the weather warms up, and then just keep an eye out for them as they come up. This is a good time to feed hungry shrubs and trees and if you haven’t done the muck for the roses do it now. Also, a good time to check of supports for climbing plants do they need replacing or are they in place, also great ready with the pea-sticks for the herbaceous coming up, Peonies and Delphiniums will need some support if the surrounding plants aren’t doing the job. The Cherry Trees should be flowering or at least ready to now, I love seeing all the different varieties, RHS Wisley is a good place to go for a wonder to look at the different trees and all the lovely varieties of bulbs, it gives a good indication of what flowers you prefer and then you can plan for next year. Just be ready as it’s going to be busy coming into May, cutting will have started by now so check if you need to soil and seed any areas as the seed will germinate quicker and will look good for the rest of the year.
