I look out of my window and the borage is only just going over now, planted late this year but thanks for the flowers in cheesy 70's ice cubes and protecting the veg from black fly. Its probably not the time for most of us, what with all this weather, to think about the garden, but now is one of my favourite times of year. The leaves glowing like fire in the trees on a sunny autumnal day, the leaves kicked up by welly boots on the way round as we Trick or Treat or Ohhh and Ahhh at the starlite explosions overhead.
Yes late October and November as Winter starts to set its chilly grip on the south is fantastic and should be enjoyed before the real nasties come in. And thats why its a good time to think about the garden, the time is now to turn over the compost heap one last time, re-cut the edges to the borders and maybe even a last cut or two to our verdant lawns after the rain this year. Winter bed prep is important right now, get the dahlia's up if you need to, protect that which needs protection at this time of year. That way with an easy mind one can put the feet up as the nights draw in knowing that there may be a little break from the toil of the sod!

Early winter is the best time of the year to start thinking about the garden, this is when the real work begins for the following summer.
