Keeping it local
Fathers time in the garden…. …..June and Mid Summer is here, I can’t believe how quick this year is going and how warm the last few weeks have been. It’s getting to the time of year when the Strawberries our out and we are protecting our fruit crops so no birds or kiddy winks get there before us. It’s also time when you have probably started to plant out your seedlings or sown direct and can see the fruits of your labour also, everything is looking pretty with the forget me nots finishing and all the spring flowers merging into the summer varieties. What’s most important is it’s Fathers day and we all know what most Fathers enjoy and that is the Barbecue, it’s their domain anything to do with fire is MAN TIME generally. It also means mowing and maintenance and there’s bound to be something that needs doing in the shed or the Greenhouse. My own father loves fuchsia’s and Begonia’s and has kept them for years, in and out of the greenhouse but they make a good show of his hanging baskets every year, also he loves growing tomatoes and Runner beans, which you can get now as bigger plants if you want your own salad to go with the BBQ meat and veg. Jobs doing, make sure you water, keep your beds and borders full as this does keep weeds at bay, and make sure you keep them from seeding if you don’t want more. Don’t forget to shade greenhouses if you are growing through the summer. Pinch out side shoots on your tomatoes if you are growing them, pick at your lettuce and radishes. Also make sure taller plants are staked or supported in some way. I’m sure by now you have done the Chelsea chop but do keep on top of dead heading and pruning spring flowering shrubs. I’m sure by now you have placed your baskets and pots and new plants make sure they are taken care of while you are away on holiday. Especially if you have just planted bedding. We are now mowing our lawns at least once a week, it obviously depends on how fertile your lawn is, but fortnightly should suffice. Happy Fathers Day and remember to clean the BBQ before you use it. Oh, and if you don’t have time just call us 😊01420 83471 Lynn and Christian Dupont Mow n Blow Garden Services Ltd MNB Horticulture Ltd
